DIY Computer Chair Repair

Jul 31 2018

A computer chair is an essential item for anyone who spends significant time in front of a monitor. Whether you are working, socializing on social media, gaming, or shopping online, everyone has their own space at home for these activities. When we purchase a chair, we expect it to be reliable and long-lasting, especially if it is made from quality materials, like the products from our store. Modern chairs are designed for optimal user comfort, thanks to ergonomic frames and adjustable seat settings. The gas lift mechanism is crucial for height adjustment and backrest tilt.

However, the gas lift is also one of the most vulnerable parts of the chair, second only to the rollers, which are relatively easy to replace. If you notice that you cannot raise or lower the seat, or if it does not stay in place and sinks under your weight, you likely have a malfunctioning gas lift. Similarly, if the chair feels unstable or tilts to one side, the gas lift may be the problem.

Repairing a computer chair yourself can save money and allow you to fix the problem quickly without waiting for a specialist. You have two options:

Option 1: replace the malfunctioning component. This option is more expensive but quite effective, especially if you follow our guidelines. To return the piece of furniture to its original condition, you will need the following tools: a hammer, pliers, a screwdriver, an iron pin or bolt at least 3/8 inch in diameter, and some lubricant.

Start by separating the backrest from the base mechanism. To do this, remove the armrests, turn the chair over, and take off the rollers. Unscrew the four screws holding the parts together and remove the seat. While the chair is upside down, push back the telescopic casing.

Next, remove the gas lift using a hammer and bolt. If it does not work, you can lubricate the tilting mechanism.

The base is removed in a similar way, with the help of pliers. Be careful not to damage the central link, i.e. the gas chamber, as this can be dangerous.

Now, reassemble the chair by connecting the seat to the mechanism, attaching the wheels to the base, and inserting the new gas lift into the corresponding hole at the bottom.

Finally, put the protective mat back in place and reattach the seat. To test the repair, sit on the chair and try the lever to ensure everything works properly.

Option 2: lock the gas lift. This less expensive method involves locking the gas lift in a fixed position. While this means you will not be able to adjust the height, it is a good solution if height adjustment is not crucial for you. We will provide more details on how to do this in upcoming articles.
