Sometimes, it is necessary not just to assemble a piece of furniture, but also to take it apart. While manufacturers provide instructions for assembling an office chair, they rarely include guidance on how to disassemble it, which can pose a challenge for many people.
That is where our company's experts come in! If you have a model with ordinary legs, the process is easy – just make sure you have the right tools for the job. However, disassembling a chair with a gas lift and a cross base requires a bit more care. Here’s how to do it:
- You will need a hammer, a chisel, and a metal tube with a round cross-section. A tube with a 1.5-inch diameter is recommended.
- Now, you need to detach the gas lift from the base. It is helpful to have an assistant for this step. Place the chair near a wall for support. Step on the base with your feet, hold the armrests with your hands, and gently rock the chair back and forth while pulling upward. An assistant can help steady the chair in case it tips over unexpectedly.
- If the gas lift does not detach using the above method, turn the chair upside down. Using a hammer, lightly tap the edge of the gas lift to loosen it. You may also need to use a chisel or metal pipe, but be careful not to damage the core, as the fasteners inside are delicate and should not be struck directly.
- If the gas lift detaches from the base but remains stuck in the mechanism (like the top-gun or multiblock), hold the chair with the tube facing down and gently tap the upper part with a hammer to loosen it. Again, having a second person to help can make this easier and safer.
- Once the main chair is disassembled, you may need to remove additional components. The rocking mechanism can be easily removed by unscrewing the four screws that connect it to the seat. If the rollers are still attached, they can usually be pulled out by hand. If the stems of the rollers remain stuck in the base, use pliers to remove them. When reassembling, you can push the rollers back into place by hand or use light taps with a hammer.
And lastly, an important piece of information! If you have the budget, it is best to consult a professional for disassembly. Additionally, keep in mind that disassembling office furniture on your own might void the warranty. Always check with the store where you purchased the chair to see if disassembly affects the warranty.
