How to Assemble an Office Chair

Jul 06 2018

An office chair is an essential part of any workspace. However, before you can sit comfortably, you need to assemble it first. While you could hire a professional assembler, if you are on a budget and have some free time, why not do it yourself?

Start by unpacking the box and laying out all the parts and accessories in your assembly area. Locate the instructions and ensure all the components are accounted for. If the chair uses hexagon head screws as fasteners, a special hex wrench should be included in the package. Once you have everything you need, you are ready to begin.

A standard office chair typically consists of two main components: a seat attached to an adjustable contour and a base, usually on wheels, that is height adjustable. Sometimes, the seat and backrest are a single piece, but they are often provided separately. In this case, you will need to assemble the seat cushion, the backrest, the armrests, and the adjustment mechanisms. There are various mechanisms with different functionalities: some chairs have a simple piaster with a spring-screw mechanism that allows for height adjustment and minor tilting.

Others might have a basic top gun mechanism that allows for rocking back at a 130-degree angle. For more advanced options, there are multi-block mechanisms and even synchro-mechanisms, which are considered the best on the market today. We will discuss the pros and cons of these features in our upcoming articles. Stay tuned to our column to become a more informed customer.

Office chairs also include a supporting base, typically consisting of a five-point base with wheels and a pneumatic gas lift. Now that we have covered the components, here is the step-by-step assembly process to ensure quick and efficient results:

  • Insert the wheels into their sockets on the base. Push the rods into the holes until you hear a click. If needed, use a rubber mallet, but be careful not to damage any plastic parts. Once the wheels are securely in place, flip the base over.
  • Attach the tilt control mechanism to the seat using bolts, along with the mechanism for adjusting the backrest. Make sure the socket for the gas lift faces forward and the tension adjustment lever faces backward. Next, attach and secure the armrests.
  • Secure the backrest to the seat with screws. For the gas lift, first remove any protective caps and then insert it into the base. If there is a casing, typically a telescopic tube, slide it over the gas lift. The lower part of the chair is now fully assembled.
  • The easiest step is to align the seat assembly with the base and insert the gas lift into the tilt control mechanism’s socket. Apply gentle pressure or sit on the chair to ensure the stem fits securely.
  • Conduct a quick check by pulling the lever down: if the chair lowers, it is working correctly. Now pull the lever up to see if the chair returns to its original position. If everything functions as expected, you have successfully assembled your chair.

If, after reading these instructions, you do not feel confident about assembling the chair yourself, just let our manager know that you need an assembly service.
